How Smithfield Arrests Work
Smithfield Police Department handles law enforcement inside the town. Johnston County runs a centralized 911 dispatch service. Dispatch is not a booking office, and it keeps no public arrest database. After an arrest, the agency report and the custody record can split apart. Smithfield Police write up why an officer acted. Once a person enters county detention, the Johnston County Sheriff's Office controls the jail record and any inmate photo displayed with it.
Smithfield was Johnston County's county seat and its second-largest incorporated place in the 2020 Census, home to 11,292 residents. That size keeps Smithfield names busy in county searches. It does not create a city jail roster, though. The town publishes no daily arrest log, live blotter, or booking-photo feed of its own. That gap is not proof of no arrest. It means the search moves to the proper record holder, which here is the sheriff.
Where Smithfield Arrests Appear
Each official source answers a different question. The JCSO arrest search covers recent arrest records. Date searches run within the prior 15 calendar days. The inmate roster lists only people housed right now. A public entry there displays identifying data, booking and arrest dates, charge rows, and an inmate photo, but neither tool filters to Smithfield alone.
| Channel | Use | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Smithfield Police Reports | City incident and crash reports | No live blotter found |
| JCSO Arrest Search | Recent name or date search | 15 calendar days |
| JCSO Inmate Search | Current county custody | Not a history |
| Johnston Ledger | Seven-day publisher page with SPD labels | Unofficial |
| RecentlyBooked | Rolling county listing | Unofficial and possibly stale |
Let official records lead every check. Copied entries can lag or omit bookings. A publisher may update on another schedule, so confirm the name and charge with JCSO and use Johnston County courts for the final result.
Find Someone Arrested in Smithfield
A city name alone rarely finds the right person. Search with a full name and date. Separate a fresh arrest from continued custody on an older booking; JCSO updates arrests daily but promises no exact posting hour.
- Open the official JCSO Arrest Search. Use a name, or the same beginning and ending date for a calendar-day check.
- Check the inmate roster if the question is present custody. Accept its notice, review the timestamp, and open the detail.
- Compare the agency. A SPD label points toward Smithfield Police for an incident report.
- If nothing appears, allow for intake lag. Call detention at 919-989-5040 or arrest reports at 919-989-5010.
- Use Johnston County courts for hearings and disposition.
Someone released may vanish from the roster while the arrest entry or court case lives on. The reverse happens too. A person arrested days ago can still be housed. The date search and the roster answer different questions, and the 24 Hour Arrests page explains why the same-date filter is not a rolling 24-hour guarantee.
Smithfield Police Records
Smithfield's police reports route covers incident and motor-vehicle reports. Pickup, mail, and a records email are the delivery options. Ordinary reports cost nothing. Accident reports may take three to five business days. Check the records page before requesting, since delivery instructions can change, and note that this city policy sets no fee or timetable for any JCSO booking photograph.
- Identify the event by name, date, location, and report number if known.
- Ask Smithfield Police for the incident report through its published channel.
- Ask JCSO separately for a county booking record or photograph.
- Ask the Johnston County Clerk for criminal-record information and the court outcome.

Official website
A police report holds incident facts, not custody. A jail detail shows a booked charge only. The court file records what happened to the charge later, and the official Smithfield Police site is the place to start for city records.

Use the city domain for police contacts, then move to JCSO for county detention.
Smithfield Booking Timing
JCSO states that arrests are updated daily. Its pages give no exact hour, weekend rule, or maximum intake lag. The date form is a calendar filter across a 15-day set, not a clock measuring the last 24 hours from your search.
Several stages pass before a booking goes public: arrest, intake, data entry, indexing, and the public detail itself. No source promises how long those stages take. Recheck the roster timestamp when timing matters. Call detention if the answer must be exact. An absent name never proves no arrest occurred.
Note: The roster's as-is warning and update timestamp make each result a snapshot, not a custody certificate.
County Seat News Coverage
SPD appears among the Johnston Ledger's agency codes. That label can tie an item to Smithfield Police. Still, the Ledger is a publisher product, not a Smithfield or JCSO database. No promise exists that every arrest appears or updates on the sheriff's schedule.
Smithfield entries also show up on Mugshots.com, Arrests.org, Mugshots.zone, Busted Newspaper, and RecentlyBooked. Each is secondary. Entries can linger after the official roster changes. JoCo Report, ABC11, and the News & Observer run event stories, not complete arrest feeds. Treat them as context only. Verify through the agency and the court.
Smithfield's 2019 Year End Report holds historic arrest-report statistics for 2018 and 2019. Those figures are not a current booking feed, and an agency label only hints at who made the arrest.
Police Jail and Court Records
A Smithfield arrest often creates records in three places. Smithfield Police holds the incident report when its officers made the arrest. Once the person reached county detention, the booking and custody record moved to JCSO. The case itself then sits with the Johnston County Clerk and its eCourts resources. Those resources track what happens after the arrest.
- Arrest report
- The arresting agency’s account of the event.
- Booking
- Jail intake that records identity, booked charges, and custody facts.
- Disposition
- The court’s later result, which may differ from the initial charge.
- Current custody
- Present jail status, not every prior arrest.
Getting out of jail never closes a case. Keeping these custodians straight keeps a records search honest. The county's booking-photo section spells out how JCSO publishes photos and where that practice stops.
Request Smithfield Arrest Reports
For a Smithfield incident record, the city's own report page is the best first stop. It also makes clear that a police report and a jail photo live in separate hands. Name the event, the record type, and the custodian you think holds it. The official Police Reports page appears below.

That page is a navigation aid only. It will not show a person's report or booking photo. Before you visit, confirm the address, the accepted payment, and current availability. JCSO is the starting point for a county booking photo; the court handles a judgment, a dismissal, or any later case event, since each route answers a different part of the arrest record.
